INSTRUMENTS
Huw began his career making harpsichords with a particular interest in the late English instruments of makers like Kirckman and Shudi which are not sufficiently appreciated in modern times. His interest in clavichords began whilst working with the highly respected maker Peter Bavington in 2004. He has made both fretted and unfretted instruments.
Harpsichords
Almost every part of a harpsichord including jacks and registers is made in the workshop by Huw. This can also include the blacksmiths work needed for machine stops and stop levers. Camel or buffalo bone is used for key-plates and boxwood is also usually available. Most hinges and other brass furniture come from Dave Law at Traditional Brassware. All veneering is done by hand. Finishing is always done with traditional materials.
CLAVICHORDS
Although apparently much simpler than harpsichords, clavichords are actually more difficult to get right. A great deal of care is taken with the details of the action, the voicing of the tangents and the listing cloth. Over-wound strings are normally used in the bass and these are also made in the workshop with many different specifications available.
